Study confirms KRIA Ionizer destroys harmful cyanobacteria
Every year, harmful algal blooms and spikes in cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, close beaches and lakes, and impair waterways.
Previous installations showed that the KRIA Ionizer with EcoSOAR™ technology could help return polluted waterways to a clean, healthy state by breaking down pollutants into organic elements. A recent study by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers confirmed the ionizer can reduce cyanobacteria up to 80 percent in five minutes.
The study tested the effect of the ionizer’s cavitation by microbubble application, and cavitation plus superoxide. The ionizer creates superoxide and injects those molecules via cavitation into the water column.
Key findings and insights from the study include:
- Cavitation and superoxide together were more effective in reducing cyanobacteria, chlorophyll and microcystin levels than cavitation alone.
- The cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa was reduced up to 80 percent in five minutes.
- Its byproduct, the microcystin toxin, was reduced up to 92 percent in five minutes.
- Concentrations of chlorophyll dropped 80 percent over 40 minutes in water treated with superoxide. The level increased in the control.
- The study confirmed that the KRIA Ionizer would be an effective water treatment for shorelines and bays, where harmful algal blooms are most common.
